The Italian educational system is currently based on the division between public school (which is based on subsidies) and private school. The levels are :
– Kindergarten (3-5 years)
– Primary school (6-10 years)
– Middle School (11-13 years)
– High school (14-18 years).
The school is compulsory until the completion the first two years of high school.
As part of high school, distinguished schools (classic, scientific, educational, artistic,language) and technical institutes professional.

School organization

The Ministry of Education shall, through its central and peripheral for services related to maternal primary, secondary, higher secondary and artistic.
Under these powers, it is for the administration Central:

Higher education

After completing the higher secondary school, students must pass an exam in order to receive their “Diploma di Maturità”.

Once they have their diplomas, they either begin their careers in their professions or move on to the University

Italy has forty two state universities, six private universities, three technical universities and twelve specialized university institutes.

Each university offers four main courses: diploma universitario (university diploma), Diploma di Laurea (Bachelor of Arts/Science), Dottorato di Ricerca (research doctorate), and Diploma di

Specializzazione (diploma of specialization).

Primary education

The primary school, begins at age six and continues for five years.

Class sizes generally run about twenty five children per class with a minimum of ten students. Schooling and textbooks are free.

The school year comprises at least 200 days between the beginning of September and the end of June.

Schools open five or six days a week, full day or half day, depending on the institution.

Compulsory annual teaching hours are 891; this amount is subdivided into 33 teaching weeks with an average amount of 27 weekly hours.

According to school autonomy, each educational institution is responsible for the organisation of its annual teaching time.

School Curricula

The Indicazioni (National guidelines) are nationally determined and adapted to local needs by each school according to school autonomy. Knowledge and skills are indicated for each subject; the school will help pupils to transform them into personal competencies.

The guidelines define the essential performance levels that should be ensured by each school.

Specific learning objectives at primary school level have been defined for the following subjects: catholic religion, Italian, English language, history, geography, mathematics, science, ICT, music, art, sport and motory sciences.

Furthermore, specific learning objectives on “education to civil life”, which include “citizenship, environment, health,nourishment and affective life education” are indicated in the guidelines.

Italian school system has been characterized in recent years by big changes: the rise of education, reorganization of technical and professional institutions, the reform of State, the institution of the right and duty to education and training, the introduction of integrated pathways between vocational education and training, strengthening the autonomy of educational institutions in the definition of training.

As in other EU countries, including Italy, the duration of education was raised to 10 years in law 27/12/2006, n.296, Article 1, paragraph 622.

The decree stipulates that everyone is guaranteed the right and true for all the duty to education and training until the attainment of a diploma or a qualification of at least three years before eighteen years of age.

The rules on education define the key competences to be acquired at the end of compulsory education: learning to learn, plan, communicate, cooperate and participate, act independently and responsibly, solve problems, identify connections and relationships, acquire and interpret information and seek to innovate the teaching methods in the four cultural core: linguistic, mathematical, scientific-technological, historical and social order to promote the full development of interaction with the natural and social reality

 The school activities are organized according to essential mandatory curriculum (Italian, mathematics, history, geography, science, English, science, art, motor), which provides prescriptive objectives; the integrating curriculum (various projects and research); workshop activities. In classes at normal time (30 hours per week) begins teaching at 8.20 and closed at 12.50.There is one return afternoon during the week from 14.00 hours to 17.00 hours. Pupils have the opportunity to benefit from the school canteen.
In classes full-time (40 hours per week) begins teaching at 8.30 and closed at 16.30. The free day is Saturday. The canteen service is considered an integral part of the school day .
Both classes in normal time and in full-time is a recreation break in mid-morning
